Briefly discuss theories supporting use of interactive whiteboards:

3. Tomlinson - Differentiated Instruction

Hour 2
Call each row of participants up to the Smartboard to set up, orient the board, and launch the Notebook software. Facilitators assist the groups in setting up the board. While the groups are setting up the board, the other participants are looking individually at the four different types of Interactive whiteboard choices. Participants spend 10 minutes in a pair and share “What you were surprised to find out?”

1. How does a smartboard get set up?
   1. USB from smartboard to Computer (this provides smartboard with power)
   2. RGB from computer to Projector
   3. Power cord from projector to electric outlet
   4. Speaker components (if applicable)
2. Wheels and stability of smartboard.
3. Different mounting options
4. How do you know if the smartboard is receiving power? (Green light)
5. How to use in a lower grade classroom: Use Step Aerobic steps, milk crate, some larger surface to avoid students falling
6. What are the parts of the smartboard?
   1. 4 pens that sit in sensor trays
   2. 1 eraser
7. Storage of items
   1. Cover: bed sheet or asking PTA to make a custom cover
   2. Pens and eraser: use Velcro and mount to back of the device
8. Participants spend ten minutes pair and sharing the way to set up the device. Faciliators are walking around the room conferring with students to ensure they have the set correctly.

Hour 3

1. Using the different pens on the board.
   1. How do the pens work?
   2. What can be used as a substitute for a pen?
   3. What happens if you misplace a pen?
2. Using the eraser on the board.
   1. How does the eraser work?
   2. What can be used as a substitute for a eraser?
   3. What happens if you misplace the eraser?
3. Toggling between the pens and the eraser.
4. What applications does the penning feature work on?
   1. Applications
   2. Internet
   3. Smart Notebook Software
5. What are the differences between the usages in different applications?
6. Participants spend 10 minutes pair and sharing when it would most advantageous to use the smart notebook software vs an application.

Hour 4

1. Software
   1. Where to find it?
   2. What is its importance?
2. What are slides?
3. How do you add a new slide?
4. How do you save your work?
5. What is a tool bar?
6. What tools are available on a tool bar?
7. How does a tool bar become customized?
8. Why customize a tool bar?
9. What are the different penning options?
10. What shapes are available? How to use the shapes?
11. What is the main difference between the shapes and penning: The eraser only works on the penning function.
12. Group Question: Considering there are different devices with different software, what is more important? The software? The device? Why? Pair and share to discuss. Look back at the resources to determine.

Hour 5

1. Participants access Smart Notebook software on their computers n(facilitators are circling room to ensure all applications open properly)
2. Students spend 30 minutes experimenting with the different tools previously taught
3. After 30 minutes students pair and share the frustrations with the software and their highlights with the software
4. As a whole group students share their new discoveries while demonstrating for class

Conclusion question: Each participant is invited to share one highlight from today’s class and one item they are looking forward to.

Homework assignment: Download smart notebook software and create a slide that has: What I knew, what I learned and what I want to learn. Save to USB drive and bring in for next class.
